Uniformity Is the Real Challenge

MgSO4 premix blending looks simple on a formulation sheet but is one of the harder operations to get right on a production floor. A small mass of magnesium salt must distribute evenly through a much larger carrier, and any segregation shows up as variable animal intake.

Feed Grade Magnesium Sulphate Specification

Start with a feed grade magnesium sulphate that declares assay, moisture, heavy-metal ceilings and particle-size distribution. Feed-grade documentation is not optional here: the premix is concentrated, so any contaminant is concentrated with it.

Achieving Premix Uniformity

premix uniformity depends on matching the particle-size distribution of the magnesium source to the carrier and to the other trace minerals. A wide size spread lets fine particles stratify during transport, even if the mixer itself performs well.

Validate with a tracer or assay on samples drawn from at least ten discharge points, not from a single grab at the top of the batch.

Magnesium Sulphate Monohydrate Basis

magnesium sulphate monohydrate at roughly 20% MgO gives a compact, predictable inclusion per kilogram of premix, and its lower moisture content improves flow and storage compared with fully hydrated grades.

Confirm the sieve band against your mixer type, since a very fine powder can dust and a coarse granule may not disperse fully in a short mixing cycle.

Application in MgSO4 Animal Feed

In MgSO4 animal feed programmes, the nutritionist sets the dietary magnesium target against the basal ration, forage and drinking water. The premix is then a delivery vehicle, not a place to make a nutritional judgement.

Never adjust inclusion rate to correct a mixing problem; fix the mixing and keep the formulated dose intact.

Designing a Trace Mineral Premix

Within a trace mineral premix, sequence the addition so the magnesium salt is introduced with the carrier rather than last into a nearly finished batch. Add mixing time based on a validated study, not on a fixed rule of thumb.

Avoid over-mixing after the point of uniformity, since prolonged agitation can actually promote segregation in a wide size distribution.

Dosage Control in Production

Calibrate the weigh hopper or micro-doser on every shift change and record the actual delivered mass against the target. A small drift across hundreds of batches is more damaging than one obvious error, because it is rarely noticed in routine checks.

Use a batch record that links the magnesium lot code, the weighed mass and the finished premix batch in one line.

Storage and Caking

Keep the salt sealed in a dry, cool store and rotate on a first-in basis. Caked material changes both flow and dose, so a bag that has hardened should be re-checked rather than simply broken up and used.
