Summary
Use MgSO4 foliar spray to correct orchard magnesium deficiency before harvest.

Why Orchards Show Magnesium Deficiency
orchard magnesium deficiency appears as interveinal yellowing on older leaves, often while younger growth still looks healthy. Because magnesium is mobile within the plant, a heavy fruit load draws it out of mature leaves first, and the symptom becomes obvious close to harvest.
Citrus, apple, mango and oil palm all show the pattern, particularly on sandy or low-pH soils where competing potassium and calcium further suppress uptake.
When MgSO4 Foliar Spray Is the Right Tool
A MgSO4 foliar spray is the fastest correction when root uptake is limited by cold, waterlogging or a compacted root zone. It bypasses the soil entirely and delivers magnesium directly through the leaf surface within days.
Foliar treatment is a correction, not a replacement for a basal programme. Use it to protect the current crop while a soil application rebuilds reserves for the next season.
Magnesium Sulphate for Fruit Trees
magnesium sulphate for fruit trees supplies magnesium and sulfur together, the two nutrients most often co-deficient in intensively managed orchards. Its high solubility makes it simple to prepare a clean spray solution without residues that block nozzles.
Use a fully dissolved crystal or powder grade and filter the tank mix before filling, since undissolved particles cause uneven application and nozzle wear.

Choosing Foliar Magnesium Sulphate Grade
Select a foliar magnesium sulphate with declared purity and low heavy-metal content, because leaf-applied products leave residues on the harvested surface. A 99.5% heptahydrate crystal or fine powder is the usual starting point.
Check the solution for compatibility with any other tank components before a full block spray, and avoid strongly alkaline mixes that reduce magnesium availability.
Leaf Magnesium Correction Protocol
For leaf magnesium correction, begin with a small test area and a 1-2% solution, then assess leaf response and any sign of scorch after 48 hours. Repeat at 10-14 day intervals during the period of highest demand rather than applying one heavy dose.
Spray in the cool part of the day with good coverage of the lower canopy, where the deficient older leaves are concentrated.
Integrating Magnesium Sulfate Fertilizer
A basal magnesium sulfate fertilizer application remains the foundation. Granular kieserite or a broadcast crystal grade rebuilds exchangeable magnesium in the root zone over the season, so the following year needs fewer corrective sprays.
Set the basal rate from a soil test and the Mg:K ratio, not from the severity of visible symptoms alone.
Diagnosis Before Treatment
Confirm the deficiency with paired leaf and soil analysis before spraying, since potassium deficiency, water stress and some viral symptoms produce similar yellowing. A tissue result avoids treating the wrong problem across an entire block.
Record which blocks were treated and when, so the next season's leaf test can show whether the basal programme actually worked.
Measuring the Response
Expect improved leaf colour within two weeks, but judge the programme on fruit size, soluble solids and return bloom rather than colour alone. Magnesium supports photosynthesis, so the yield effect shows up over the season.
Keep an untreated comparison row where practical. It is the most convincing evidence for both the agronomist and the farm budget.
